Adapting quickly to a changing world in the first quarter of 2020, our teams never stopped building for People Who Expect More. As a result of our dedication to our craft and surrounding communities, Shiel Sexton was honored to win the following awards this year:
Coalition of Construction Safety Outstanding Project Safety Award
Shiel Sexton was awarded the Outstanding Project Safety award in August for the University of Notre Dame’s Baumer Hall. Early in the project, Notre Dame, along with Indiana Occupational Safety Health Administration (IOSHA) and Shiel Sexton, entered a strategic safety partnership and assisted with its execution during construction. The partnership opened lines of communication between the subcontractors and IOSHA, elevating all contractors and subcontractors’ overall safety and health performance on the project.
“We feel privileged to receive CCS’s Outstanding Project Safety Award,” says Ray Lake, Corporate Safety Director. “We promote trainings paired with vigilant safety protocols to help keep every person on our jobsite safe.”
Accumulating over 151,265 craft hours, Shiel Sexton was pleased to deliver this new state-of-the-art residence hall with an injury rate well below the state and national averages.
In Charlotte, we took home the North Carolina Department of Labor’s Gold achievement for five projects, including: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools North Mecklenburg High School CTS Automotive Classroom and Garage, Pike Nurseries Cornelius, Project Storm Trooper, Project Jedi and Mint Street Parking Deck. Additionally, we received a Gold Award for the seventh consecutive year. This award signifies a commitment to jobsite safety with a reduced number of injuries and the application of safety-forward practices.
“It’s always exciting to have our safety records recognized by the NC Department of Labor,” says Safety Manager Amy Fletcher, who oversees the Charlotte office projects. “We take pride in getting every person home each night in the same condition they came to work in.”

Through donations of funds, services and the direct involvement of employees with local charities, Shiel Sexton has always taken great pride in its strong community investment. Shiel Sexton employees are encouraged to be active participants of charitable organizations, and the company works hard to support their efforts. Partnering with United Way for more than 25 years, Shiel Sexton was presented with the highly coveted United Way Spirit Award in July.
