Shiel Sexton Spotlight…

Our next Shiel Sexton SE Region Spotlight is Tom Bliss, our Project Engineer. Tom has worked at Shiel Sexton for six months now, and in his interview he talked about his day-to-day responsibilities and what he likes about Shiel Sexton.

What do you like most about Shiel Sexton and your role within the company?

I truly appreciate the closeness of the Southeast office and I feel that everyone from top-to-bottom cares about helping each other succeed.

As a Project Engineer, I most enjoy being in a “hybrid” position on my jobsite. This allows me to be helpful and gain knowledge via both with administrative work for the project as well as help around the building as another set of boots on the ground for our field guys.

What are some of your favorite projects that you’ve worked on during your time with Shiel Sexton?

I have only worked on the Aspens Verdae Senior Living project thus far in my time with Shiel Sexton, but it will certainly be a project that is important to me due to how much I have learned here in such a short time.

What are your typical day-to-day responsibilities?

Recently, I have overseen the punch list and owner walks.  I mark and oversee issues in different sections of the building ahead of owner punch walks, schedule the cleaning crews, and perform the walks with the owner’s rep. After the walk is complete, I distribute and track the punch items to the subcontractors, then close them out ahead of the final walk in order to turn over units to ownership.

I have also been managing our summer interns to show them the ins and outs of the jobsite and the Project Engineer position, such as RFIs, submittals, coordinating meetings with subcontractors and owners, newsletters, and using Procore to track everything in the project.

What do you like most about working in the Construction industry?

I enjoy making daily progress that you can see as the building grows and nears completion. I appreciate having something tangible to show for our team’s hard work every day.  It helps on even the toughest days to step back and look around to see how far the project has come in the last month, week, or even just a couple of days.

Thank you, Tom, for your hard work and continuous service at Shiel Sexton!
