Shiel Sexton Intern Spotlight…

William Perez is a Sophomore at Purdue University, and he is majoring in Construction Engineering and Management.

What projects will you be working on/are involved with this summer?

I am working on the Purdue Gateway project as a Project Engineer Intern. I will be working closely under a Project Engineer and Assistant Project Managers by helping them with whatever they may need.

Have you worked at Shiel Sexton before?

This will be my first summer working at Shiel Sexton and I am looking forward to learning as much as possible during my internship.

What is your past internship experience (if any)?

This will be my first professional internship with a company. I have had various jobs in the past in the hospitality and service industry, but I am excited to finally work in the Construction and Management industry.

What are you hoping to learn this summer with this internship?

I am hoping to learn valuable skills and techniques for working as a Project Engineer in commercial scale projects with similar magnitude to the Purdue Gateway Project. I am gaining valuable experience in the field such as learning how to use various construction management software and programs which helps me visualize and improve my skills. Lastly, I am hoping to be able to overcome and adapt to whatever issues may present themselves on the project site in an efficient and safe way.

How will this internship advance your career?/ Where would you like your career to go?

This internship has given me the opportunity to put my foot in the door and demonstrate my talents by putting them to use for the benefit of the company. I am looking to become a respectable Project Manager or Superintendent in the future, and I am hoping that by continuing to work and learn under great mentors at Shiel Sexton, I will be able to accomplish these things.

What do you like about working at Shiel Sexton?

In my short time at Shiel Sexton, I value the character and genuineness of the people I have been working under. They never hesitate to stop and explain something to me, and for someone who has lots of questions like myself, it makes me feel valued as an intern.
