The Indianapolis Central Canal will begin to see a younger crowd as the new Downtown Canal Playscape opens next to the USS Indianapolis Memorial in the next two weeks. The playground is the first of its kind in the United States and will offer a much need place to play, explore, relax and socialize.
As the number of families living downtown and around the Canal has increased over the last decade, the need grew for a greenspace with play equipment. The playscape will join the ranks of the Indianapolis Zoo, White River Gardens, and Indiana State Museum as entertaining, kid-friendly places for parents to take their youngsters.
“This space will appeal to such a wide variety of people who utilize the canal,” says Project Manager Craig Pelusey. “The uniqueness of this playground is in its sculptural design the playground sits gently in the landscape offering a visual experience unlike anything else in Indianapolis.”
The Playscape has been in the works since 2013, with Shiel Sexton Executive Vice President Brian Sullivan and his wife, Mary Ann Sullivan, being early advocates.
“There are so many young families that live or visit downtown and there hasn’t been a park built for them in over fifty years,” states Sullivan. “It is time to communicate clearly that we value families in our downtown.”
The project is set to open in mid-November, so keep an eye out!
