The construction industry can be an exciting career to jump into but it can also be overwhelming to students when deciding on a career path. Shiel Sexton is determined to assist students in the Charlotte area as they navigate this journey. This is why Shiel Sexton participates in The ROC Charlotte program.

ROC Charlotte is a non-profit ministry serving high school students in the greater Charlotte area. They partner with Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) to provide opportunities to students that are juniors and seniors. Their mission is to “educate and mentor high school students for technical education and career opportunities in the construction industry.”

Students build skills by training in advanced carpentry, electrical, HVAC and construction management through a combination of structured classroom and applied learning on the job with local professional mentors. Juniors are exposed to all of these skilled trades, and seniors narrow down to one trade as they prepare for either an associate’s degree at CPCC, continue onto a four-year university degree after completing their associate degree, or join the construction industry directly.

This summer, Shiel Sexton will be mentoring a high school student in our preconstruction department to assist with various assignments while providing real-world experiences inside the construction industry. The student will assist with bidding, pricing, managing the subcontractor database, and setting up projects in I-Square Foot. Shiel Sexton plans on supporting at least one intern from the ROC Charlotte program each year, and we are excited to continue building relationships and providing opportunity through this program with students all over the Charlotte area.
