Every year, Shiel Sexton comes together to celebrate the year in review and to honor the winners of Shiel Sexton’s most prestigious awards. This year, we had eight outstanding recipients of these awards.

Timothy J. Sexton Award for Outstanding Citizenship – Sara Whitten, Executive Assistant, was honored for her numerous outreach activities such as: Charlotte’s Men Shelter Breakfast, Winter Coat Drive, Class Central supply drive to name a few. Some of her accomplishments include successfully completing seven marathons, raising over $18,000 for the MS Society, and being a huge inspiration to people afflicted with multiple sclerosis throughout the Carolinas. Sara recently celebrated her 10th Year of Service with Shiel Sexton.

Richard C Shiel Award of Excellence – Office/Management – Courtney Smith, Safety Manager, has been an outstanding member of the concrete group since arriving at our company in the summer of 2016. She truly excels at injury management while still putting our employees’ health and wellbeing first. The figures prove her impact with the number of severe injuries trending downward since her time here. Courtney was a huge asset to our Concrete group’s safety success.

Richard C Shiel Award of Excellence – Field – Efrain Ramirez, Carpenter, is extremely skilled in every aspect of carpentry and can be counted on to consistently deliver the highest level of quality work with a positive attitude and work ethic second to none. He helps mentor incoming workforce employees and takes time to help people on site with him learn and excel. Efrain was named 2017 Craftsperson of the Year by the Coalition for Construction Safety and is a graduate of the Shiel Sexton Site Leadership Program this year. Effrain takes pride in his work and our company and demonstrates Expect More in all that he does.

Rising Star – Office/Management – Kurt Roubal, Project Manager, is well regarded and has embraced the Shiel Sexton culture by continuing to outperform and deliver results. In less than three years he earned a promotion to a Project Manager, a true demonstration of the attributes of a Rising Star. His professionalism, teamwork skills and approach to quality and safety are just a glimpse of what makes him a rising star. We look forward to his continued growth and achievements.

Rising Star – Field – Eddie Morgan, Foreman, is always willing to work whenever he is asked and often taking on extra hours on his own, and demonstrates an overall commitment to the Shiel Sexton team. He has helped with the carpenters, labored for concrete and for the past two and half years he has been working as a foreman in layout. He has been a member of our safety committee, is a Shiel Sexton Site Leadership Program graduate and continues his education outside of Shiel Sexton at a college level, as he is working towards his Construction Management degree at Ivy Tech Community College. Eddie is a huge asset to our field workforce and this recognition is well deserved.

Gilbert Hutchins Award for Innovation – Deb Engelke, Senior Accounting Manager, Brenda Bertram, Payroll Manager, and Tim Malarney, Director of Information Technology, found an alternate solution within their everyday job that ultimately saved Shiel Sexton time and money, while adding convenience and efficiency for all employees. The collaboration between this year’s award winners enabled Shiel Sexton to utilize MyAline website which allows employees to view, print or download pay statements and W2’s, making them easily accessible for employees and eliminating the need to print and mail direct deposit stubs.
