March 14 was a day of community outreach, as various Indianapolis-based agencies gathered at Ivy Tech Community College to communicate the multitude of construction industry-related jobs available to those in need. The program focused on getting interested persons the correct credentials deemed advantageous when interviewing with construction firms.

Hosted by Ivy Tech Community College, presentations by city councilman Vop Osili and Mike Thibideau from the Indiana Construction Roundtable spoke to the overwhelming need for tradesmen in the construction industry and encouraged attendees to complete trainings needed to apply for these jobs. Tracy Hartman of EmployIndy invited participants to explore the many resources offered during the networking session, which immediately followed the presentation. Representatives from WorkOne Indiana were onsite and equipped with iPads to schedule pre-employment training.

Brian Statz of The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis also spoke about the Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience, a $35 million sports and fitness experience currently undergoing construction directly north of the museum’s entrance. The project’s heavy use of subcontractors will provide many people the opportunity to work on the site.

The info session’s main goal was to advocate for a job fair on April 25, which will allow those interested in a construction career to explore available positions with subcontractors. The most helpful credentials and certifications to obtain before applying for construction jobs are CCS Cards from Midwest Toxicology and OSHA 10-Hour training. Shiel Sexton will be offering the OSHA 10 Hour class on March 30-31, and the OSHA 30-Hour class from March 20-23.
