Shiel Sexton Spotlight…

This month’s Shiel Sexton Spotlight features Michael Fite, our Superintendent. Michael has worked at Shiel Sexton for nearly 8 years. In this interview, he talked with us about why he enjoys working at Shiel Sexton and his position within the company.

What do you like most about Shiel Sexton and your role within the company?

I think what I love most about Shiel Sexton is that I appreciate and enjoy the comradery and support that the Shiel Sexton Team gives to each of us every single day. The positivity within Shiel Sexton is contagious and all team members are there for each other when needed. Also, I love that each and every person’s opinions and suggestions are welcomed and in fact used when possible. What I love about my role is that it allows me to interact with nearly everyone on our jobsites. I ensure that our workers are working safely and can go home to their families at the end of each working day, and I truly value that part of my role.

What are some of your favorite projects that you’ve worked on during your time with Shiel Sexton?

Frankly, there are numerous projects that I have enjoyed working on over the years, but I would have to say working on projects such as Belmont Abbey College, Mattress Firm, Pike Nurseries, Johnson Wales University, and lastly multiple Telecom/Data Center projects. I think that working on all of these projects has shown me the vast capabilities that Shiel Sexton has and how we work hard to continually push ourselves to be there for our variety of clients.

What are your typical day-to-day responsibilities?

Typically, each day is different as things change on a regular basis on job sites. Each day we plan and discuss our work tasks to assure we are staying on top of schedule while working safely. My main responsibilities include conducting daily reports and inspections on quality, progress and safety, providing training, documenting work, building and tracking schedules, photographic documentation, conducting logistics changes and notes as well as holding safety, sub-contractor and OAC meetings.

What do you like most about working in the Construction industry?

I have always thoroughly enjoyed building things. I think you have to “love what you do” to excel in this industry, especially with the difficulties we encounter day to day. I love the smell of dirt when you are breaking ground on a new project and seeing the end result of one of our projects is extraordinary. There’s truly no better feeling than to pass those final inspections and hand the keys over to a satisfied client!

I hope that my role in the Shiel Sexton Safety Department creates safety awareness, thorough and passionate training, positive attitudes, and the assurance that we all look out for each other!

Thank you, Michael, for your hard work and continuous service at Shiel Sexton!
