Shiel Sexton worked tirelessly to ensure that the University of South Carolina would achieve LEED® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) on the Patterson Hall project. This exceeds the original goal set in place and signifies USC’s exceptional commitment to sustainability.

Shiel Sexton was the general contractor on the renovation and expansion of Patterson Hall on the USC’s campus in Columbia, SC. Patterson Hall had been housing over 500 students since the 1960s and closed in May 2010 for extensive renovations and additions. This 187,000 sf., 10-story project included the addition of important structural elements such as seismic reinforcement, sprinklers for fire suppression and an upgrade to the fire detection systems. The project also included a “Green Roof” terrace and four cast-in-place tower appendages attached to the existing frame. It has literally been transformed into a state-of-the-art, environmentally-sensitive housing and learning facility.
