On Tuesday, August 4th, Shiel Sexton joined the Red Cross, Riley Hospital for Children Trauma Services – Fire & Life Safety Division, and Indianapolis Fire Station 10 in the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign.  The campaign initiative aims to reduce deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25% in the next five years.

Teams of three people, two volunteers and one IFD officer, hit the streets to canvass neighborhoods and knock on doors to find homes with smoke detectors and install them.  Volunteers also replaced batteries in homes with smoke alarms, and offered fire escape route suggestions.

The Shiel Sexton team had an AWESOME time and they were able to visit 299 homes, install 80 smoke detectors and replace more than 20 smoke detector batteries! In total there were 10 teams with 25 IFD members and 25 volunteers!

One working smoke detector in a home increases a family’s chance of survival by 40% so now 100 families in the Indianapolis area are more safe.  We’d like to dedicate this SSCares event to James Shiel and his son, little Andy Shiel, who were lost in a home fire in 2014.

Thank you so much to everyone who participated!

This event was spearheaded by SSCares, a volunteer committee comprised of Shiel Sexton employees that encourages others to advocate, donate or volunteer with local nonprofit organizations.
