ntegrity, enjoyment, expertise and success: these core principles have guided Shiel Sexton and its employees since 1962.

From trade workers in the field, to project engineers, to human resources and accounting, Shiel Sexton manages to blend its diverse team into one thriving company.

Today we feature one of the Shiel Sexton team members who make it all possible:

Chen Chen – Project Coordinator

What is your role at Shiel Sexton?

I am a project coordinator.

How did you get to this position?

I got this position through the Purdue University, Dept. of Building Construction Management career fair. After talking to Kevin (Potter) and Heather (Brooks) during the career fair in Feb, 2012, I was very interested in Shiel Sexton’s culture and the Nanshan project, on which the client is Chinese. They offered me an interview at the main office afterwards. After the interview, Kevin drove to Purdue and handed me the job offer.

What accolades have you received in your career?

I published two journal papers, two conference papers and I was a co-author for the appendix for the 2012 ASHE Health Facility Commissioning Handbook when I was a graduate student at Purdue University. I am also a volunteer at Indianapolis Hangzhou Sister City Committee (IHSCC) and received the 2013 Volunteer of the Year from the Mayor’s office sister cities program.

What projects are you currently working on?

I am currently working on the Purdue Seng-Liang Wang Hall project at West Lafayette, IN. Being able to build a building at Purdue makes me feel very happy and I am very proud of myself as a Purdue Alumni.

What do you enjoy the most about the company?

I enjoy the flexible working environment, family oriented management style and high potential for career growth.

What would you do if you weren’t in the construction industry?

I might be a professor at a university. In addition to construction, I also have the passion to be an expert in a certain area and educate people who share the same passion with me.

What is one thing that everyone should do or experience in their lives?

Travel abroad. I was born in China and came to America in 2010. Being in the U.S. for three years, I saw and experienced a lot of cultural difference between America and China. Having experience in a country which has a different culture will teach you a lot about yourself and help you to format your understanding of the rest the world.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I am a good Chinese cook… Come to my place and try some Chinese food!

What do you like to do for fun?

I like swimming, tennis and recently I began to learn how to ski. I had a lot of fun at Perfect North Slopes. I also enjoy playing Poker games and Mahjong with my friends. I really like singing Karaoke but haven’t sang for a while. I also like to play the piano when I feel down.

Many thanks to Chen Chen for the interview and for bringing his talents to the Shiel Sexton team!
