The University of Louisville recently selected Shiel Sexton to serve as the Construction Manager/General Contractor for a $35 million renovation and expansion of the Belknap Campus Student Activity Center. The project involves renovations to half of the existing space as well as 32,969 SF of new construction, and will pursue LEED® certification.

The project team will surgically conduct a tightly-phased project schedule so that existing Student Activity Center remains open and operational during construction. The project includes the relocation of the main kitchen and bookstore, the removal of the main pedestrian bridge, relocation of the main entrance, replacement of four sets of escalators with ornamental stairs, replacement of the existing air handling units, and installation of new HVAC controls throughout the building.

The newly renovated and expanded Student Activity Center will enhance services, spaces, and programs for the University of Louisville community. Upon completion in Spring 2018, the project will add 16 new meeting rooms to support student organization events, departmental functions, and University-wide activities. The central escalators will be replaced with an open stairway, transforming the space with an inviting, open floorplan. The renovation will also provide enhanced dining facilities, and expanded bookstore and retail areas with outside patios, new lounge areas, upgraded infrastructure, and an updated building façade.

Shiel Sexton is proud to be part of this exciting project, which supports the University of Louisville’s mission to foster engagement in student-led programs and services that enrich the education experience by maximizing the capacity of students to learn, serve, and lead.
