In the fall of 1978, Dick Shiel’s son, Andy, joined the group, bringing the team total to five employees. Andy was the only office employee at the time. Andy’s first project was a Village Pantry store. The Shiel Sexton company car was an El Camino.

The company moved from downtown Indianapolis to Castleton, IN, on the north side of Indianapolis. Shiel Sexton brought in $2.6 million in revenue.

Andy Shiel became partner in the firm, and Shiel Sexton was up to $3 million in revenue. This year also marks the completion of Shiel Sexton's first historic renovation, The Century Building.

While working on the St. Pius Catholic School renovation and addition, a few “bag phones” (the early ancestor to cell phones) are purchased for Shiel Sexton employees.

Shiel Sexton completed Deer Creek Music Center (now known as Klipsch Music Center) in Noblesville, IN, for Sunshine Promotions. Indiana gospel singer, Sandy Patti, was the headliner when it opened on May 20th.

All Shiel Sexton project managers shared one office computer: an IBM 6150 RT. It was located in a general common space and Project Managers typically used it to create schedules and basic spreadsheets.

With the construction of the Olin Biological Sciences building at DePauw University, Shiel Sexton embarks on a long-standing relationship with the university. Over the next 20 years, Shiel Sexton will complete 20 projects on the Greencastle, IN, campus.

Shiel Sexton completes its first project for ITT Technical Institute, a private college system that offers technology-oriented programs. With programs located in over 35 states, Shiel Sexton followed this client nationally for over a decade.

Shiel Sexton completes its first LEED certified project by the USGBC. Three buildings on the Southeast Regional Treatment Center campus, a mental health services facility in Madison, IN, receive the certification.

Shiel Sexton was hired to serve as Construction Manager on the $275 million Indiana Convention Center Phase V Expansion. The project included the demolition of the RCA Dome.

Shiel Sexton won the coveted General Contractor of the Year from the Indiana Subcontractors Association. Within five years, Shiel Sexton will win the award a total of three times.

Shiel Sexton travels to Kinsale, Ireland, to implement a Quality Control Program for Eli Lilly & Company. It is our first international project. Shiel Sexton also launches its company-wide quality initiative called “Leave Your Mark”, a program that promotes accountability at all levels for quality control.
